MMM.tv: Hasan Bakhshi on Not Rocket Science

Following last week’s publication of Not Rocket Science: a roadmap for arts and cultural R&D, I went to NESTA to see one of its authors Hasan Bakhshi to find out more about where the idea for the paper came from.

Not Rocket Science – new MMM paper

Today sees the launch of the newest MMM paper – Not Rocket Science [read it here].  Written by Hasan Bakhshi, Radhika Desai and Alan Freeman, it outlines their radical new roadmap for cultural R&D.

The authors’ proposals challenge two entrenched prejudices, which block arts and cultural organisations from playing their full role in society and economy.

  1. arts and culture are largely excluded from R&D by definitions based on its Science and Technology (S&T) origins
  2. the arts and cultural sector relies on a conception of creativity that mystifies too much of its work, preventing it from accessing valuable public resources

MMM.tv: Dave Moutrey on the Art of With

This is an interview that I held with Dave Moutrey, Director of Cornerhouse - the leading mixed arts venue in Manchester. I was particularly keen to hear more about Cornerhouse’s Art of With programme which was kicked off by the commissioning of Charlie Leadbeater’s paper of the same name. This was followed by further essays and a seminar series.

As well as this thought-leadership – and I highly recommend reviewing the first seminar summary to get a flavour for the ideas – I was particularly intrigued to hear about how they are taking these ideas of openness, self-organising and user-as-producer and incorporating them into their core business.
