The name Mission Models Money recognises that these three aspects of any organisation – mission (programmes), model (organisational capacity) and money (capital structure) – are intimately related. Therefore any change in one inevitably has an impact – planned or unplanned – on others. Action is therefore needed on all three fronts at the same time to enable cultural organisations to flourish.
As well as an established reputation for commissioning and publishing leading-edge essays and provocation papers MMM’s action research has produced a significant body of reports, case studies and toolkits all of which seek to help creative practitioners and organisations and public and private funders build organisational and financial resilience.

Invitation to an Alternative Future
First published in 2007, Invitation to an Alternative Future is a short inspirational book which considers the “habits of mind and habits of heart that will help to make best use of (the MMM programme’s) practical insights – not only within ourselves and our organisations but throughout the complex ecology that supports the making of art.”
The People Theme
This MMM research project, conducted in 2009/10, investigated the competencies, qualities and attributes which will enable creative practitioners and organisations to thrive in the challenging environment of the 21st Century.
Exemplar case studies
During 2005/07 MMM worked closely with seven small and medium sized organisations each of whom had embarked on a major change programme which aimed to evolve their business models. The case studies related to mission are:
- LIFT – this mature performing arts organisation revitalises its mission and vision in response to global drivers of change and develops The Lift, an innovative, dynamic and interactive new way of public engagement.
- Manchester Camerata - at the time without a fit-for-purpose administrative or rehearsal space, the case study follows the orchestra’s move to become resident within the Northern College of Music
