Tools & Reports

As well as an established reputation for commissioning and publishing leading-edge essays and provocation papers MMM has authored a significant body of material on organisational and financial development in the arts and cultural sector in the form of reports, case studies and toolkits.

Below is a rich archive of key documents and resource packs from our previous phases of work. New material will be added as a result of our current programme soon.

Towards a healthy ecology of arts & culture
This classic 2007 paper summarised all of MMM’s learning from 2005-2007.

Arts Professional article series
In 2005-7 MMM published a popular series of nine articles with Arts Professional, exploring the latest thinking emerging from the action research.

2005 Kick-off Research
MMM began as a result of two large-scale conversations in 2004 and 2005.  Preparation for the 2005 conversation took the form of an exploration into what MMM identified as the seven key themes: governance, finance, key competencies, demographics, technology, marketing/participation and strategic alliances.  Dedicated teams compiled succinct research reports on each of these topics.

Exemplar case studies
During 2005/07 MMM worked closely with seven small and medium sized organisations each of whom had embarked on a major change programme which aimed to evolve their business models.  The organisations were the Aegis Trust, Audiences Yorkshire, Lift, Manchester Camerata, MLA Yorkshire, SE Dance and Watershed.

Governance tools & case studies
Improving the Governance of arts and cultural organisations who were constituted as charities was a key theme of MMM’s work during 2005/07.  As well as the materials from a national road show for non-executive Directors and Trustees and executives, five case studies and a popular checklist tool were produced.

New & Alternative Financial Instruments
In 2007 MMM published a breakthrough report into forms of finance alternative to grants, so-called New & Alternative Financial Instruments, together with a series of cases studies to explain their relevance and use by arts and cultural organisations. We have revised this material and given it a refresh and added some new material from our current programme as well.

We also published three case studies of how Charity Bank had helped some organisations successfully invoke loan finance.
